In December 2001 the SEI CMMI Product Team released version 1.1 of the Capability Maturity Model Integrated for Systems Engineering and Software Engineering (CMMI-SE/SW 1.1). After several years of preparation the CMMI replaced both the CMM version 1.1 of 1993 (SW-CMM) and the systems engineering standard EIA 731. According to the SEI survey data, several hundred organisations from all over the world have adopted this model for their process improvement activities [34]. After several years of use and adoption by the industry, strengths and weaknesses of this model identified during implementations of the model, previous experience with process improvement and comparisons to other quality models are summarized in this paper. Despite some clearly favourable aspects of the standard, the following key issues were identified:
